Title: Useful but uncommon baby gifts?
shygemini - August 20, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
I've been collecting little things for my niece/nephew to be (not sure which it will be) but i was wondering, since alot of you gals on the forum have kids, what are some baby gifts you would recommend? What couldn't you live without?
Any suggestions are welcome....i just said uncommon as my sister in law has been buying alot of stuff herself as well.
I have a feeling i'm going to spoil this kid rotten

I don't know how uncommon my suggestions are, but...
I could never have too many cloth diapers. NOT for use as diapers, because I used disposable, but to use as burp cloths! New babies go through TONS of burp cloths and it is hard to keep them all washed up unless you have plenty. :)
Teething toys. Babies put everything in their mouths (when they are a bit older than newborn) and it seems people like to get the fanciest toys, things that they themselves think is cool, but in my experience, the child loves the simple, plain and sensible toy... OH and when they get a bit older, toddler stage, they will choose the BOX the toy came in!
DON'T FORGET MOM! Everyone always forgets the new Mom... *sigh* when she is in the hospital, after delivery, make up a gift basket of personal beauty products or something she truly loves... ;)
Hmmm... I can't think of anything else right now, although I know there are tons and tons of little things... LOL You will have so much fun 'spoiling' this little one, Shy!! :D

thanks teach!
those are great suggestions :huggs:
i'll have to think about what i could get for my sister in law- that is something that didn't even cross my mind, which is rather inconsiderate of me

Yep, it's always good for the new mum to get a surprise gift :D
umm just sort of thinking of different things...as Teach said, nappies are great also muslin cloths are lovely and soft for the baby baths...things that are fairly common but get lots of use are baby powders, baby bottles and teets (if they are not breast feeding) it's always good to have spares, but definately make sure they are good quality. You could make up a really nice basket with powders, booties, rattles, teething rings and bibs.
It's also nice for the baby to get a special blanket, my girls have still got theirs from when they were babies. I also still have a big teddy bear from when my son was born, he's almost 17 now!
There's also the idea of a baby photo album, there are some really sweet ones that you can buy.
Let us know what you end up getting :) I love things like that :D

those are fantastic ideas purrple! i was looking at some baby photo albums yesterday actually.
I really like the idea of the blanket, i wish i could knit or quilt or something so i could make one myself.

I don't have any kids but my cousin has two and she had this pillow like thing that went around her waist so that she could rest her arms on it while holding the baby...not sure what it is called but she LOVED it. Also I've been seeing customers come in lately with a sling like thing to hold the baby as well.
