Title: Stormy's triathlon training

stormgirl - August 31, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
I am trying to get more of a structured training plan in place for getting going on my triathlon training. So far I have been getting used to the transition from cycling to running. Very peculiar sensation and quite unpleasant for the first 10 minutes. So today I cycled a hilly 10K and ran a hilly 4K. This is a fairly short distance but I will be adding to that distance as my body adjusts to the training. Eventually I want to increase on distance and speed. I will be taking up swimming and starting to train in that way also. The transition from swimming to cycling will need to be ther other 'brick' I crack!
I will use this as my training diary, outlininghow I am feeling physically and mentally!
My bro is setting up a training plan. Eventually I want to be able to swim 750 metres, ride 25K and run 6K all back to back. This is my goal.

so today my cycling went well, my legs felt good and the transition was pretty smooth despite that drunk feeling for the first half mile. I felt pretty good when I got back, energised although I had a slight stitch in my right hand side for the last part of the ride and the first part of the run. No gut ache I am pleased to report, runners trots have been giving me gip lately!

Tomorrow I am going to do a 9K run.

Cherriterri - August 31, 2007 06:38 PM (GMT)
Awesome Storm!! I can't wait to see how your training goes. I eventually want to do a tri as well. I was thinking about a sprint distance maybe next summer. When are you planning on an actual race?

TeachX3 - September 1, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)

Wow, I am in awe of you Stormy... what determination and (to me) super athletic ability!! I look forward to reading this diary!

stormgirl - September 1, 2007 05:48 AM (GMT)
Thanks Teach :) Hi cherri, what a goal to have for your weightloss...
well I am thinking of doing a duathlon first. Not only will this ease me in gently but I can see what I think before going the whole hog. I have been looking for a local one I can do with my brother as he has done duathlons and triathlons for years.I am certainly ready for a duathlon but I am thinking I would like to do a sprint distance triathlon by Jan. Then work my way up to a full distance triathlon (1 mile swim, 40K bike ride, 10K run). Triathletes are some of the fittest out there and I want to be one of them. :happydance:

shygemini - September 1, 2007 06:12 AM (GMT)
that will be an amazing goal to accomplish storm and i know you can do it!

i can't swim properly, run, or ride a bike so i think i'll leave the triathlons up to you and cherri  :happydance:

sapphire - September 1, 2007 10:24 AM (GMT)
That's amazing, Stormy!! I look forward to reading about your progress. :cheer:

Cherriterri - September 1, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
A duathlon sounds like a great idea Storm, you are already training for that transition anyway.

I eventually want to work my way up to an olympic distance tria as well but I think that will be a while in the future.

I did a very short sprint tri a couple of years ago and I loved it! I came in last but the people there were so supportive and the other triathletes waited around for me to finish and cheered me on the whole way! I burst into tears when I crossed the finish line. I said I felt bad that I was so slow and they looked at me and said, "who cares, you finished it, that is more than somebody sitting on the couch at home is doing. You are a triathlete!" It was very emotional for me to have that much support. So, even if you are not in perfect shape when you do your tri, storm you will be accepted and supported.

NicC - September 2, 2007 12:13 AM (GMT)
Wow Stormy - you have amazing goals. I just know you can do it. I'm still working on running around the block (ok so the block is about a mile, lol) Cherri - what's a sprint distance triathlon??

Cherriterri - September 2, 2007 12:46 AM (GMT)
The one I did was 250 metre swim, 15km bike and a 3km run. They vary though and most sprint distance ones are a bit longer. It is a great way to start doing triathlons though.

stormgirl - September 3, 2007 08:57 PM (GMT)
Oh way cool Cherri that must havefelt so good completing it. How much did you train before hand and for how long? I am in awe of you lady, it is a really hard thing to do..no matter what distance as it requires such agoodlevel of fitness just to complete the three competencies. Respect to you!

I did a 4K run and 13K bike ride earlier (back to back) and was surprised to discover that was much harder on the old legs than the other way around.

Cherriterri - September 4, 2007 05:18 AM (GMT)
It felt amazing to just complete something like that but I am so stubborn I never would have not finished it

I didn''t train for all that long for it, maybe 3 months. To be honest I am in WAY better shape now than when I did it. I pretty much entered to prove to myself that I could actually do something like that.

I look forward to the challenge of doing another one. To see how much better I can do now that I have actually been working on it.

stormgirl - September 10, 2007 06:58 AM (GMT)
It must be an incredible feeling to finish Cherri
I am doing a half marathon on September 30th, my brother is doing it too and so is another friend. I am nervous but excited! It will be the furthest I have run..not sure if I am fully ready but race day adrenaline should help with the extra mileage

Cherriterri - September 10, 2007 07:19 AM (GMT)
I'm sure you'll do great with all the training you have been doing Storm. That sounds like a good race. A full marathon seems soooooo long I think a half is a good idea.

Good Luck!! :wooohooo:

stormgirl - September 10, 2007 07:59 AM (GMT)
Thanks Cherri :) the route is fairly flat apart from the last quarter mile that is up a really really steep hill at to the finish. But by that point I will be able to do it as my body will bemore than warmed up by then!

stormgirl - September 12, 2007 07:23 PM (GMT)
I started my proper training for the half marathon yesterday and all is going well...my brother has set me a training plan to build my endurance for the event. I don't normally run on the flat and have been in my training, my goodness it is tougher in some ways that running up hills!!!

Cherriterri - September 12, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
You are so dedicated Storm! Great Job.

TeachX3 - September 12, 2007 08:16 PM (GMT)

It is so cool that you are doing this with your bro Storm!! KUDOS to BOTH of you!!

OH and Cherri... WOW!! :yourock:

stormgirl - September 13, 2007 11:52 AM (GMT)
Thanks Teach and Cherri...I too am in awe of you Cherri...doing that sprint must have been tough! At least you know you could do another now you have completed one..
Training went well today although my tummy is a little bitupset. only ran for 40 minutes but cramping started. We are trying to determine what causes my cramping so have been experimenting with my diet. I don't want to be running 2 an a half hours of pure pain! I have cut out tap water just to rule out any pollutant potential and also reduced my dairy. I have a rest day tomorrow and then running time increases for me as from Saturday. The training plan is quite intense and I will be running 5 days a week plus a couple of gym sessions.

NicC - September 13, 2007 01:00 PM (GMT)
You are awesome Storm! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

shygemini - September 13, 2007 03:04 PM (GMT)
great job storm! :danceparty:

i hope you figure out what is causing the cramping... :huggs:

TeachX3 - September 13, 2007 04:17 PM (GMT)
Cramping and you STILL carry on! OMGosh I do not know if I would ever have that kind of discipline!! KUDOS to you girl!!

Cherriterri - September 13, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
Great Job Storm!! Hvae you thought about gluten being the culprit for the cramping? Tons of people have gluten sensitivities. It is a very difficult thing to avoid though since it is in wheat.

stormgirl - September 16, 2007 06:05 PM (GMT)
Hmmm good idea Cherri, I will consider that one too. I have been trying to rule things out. Firstly I cut out drinking the tap water and sticking with bottled water, I have cut out caffeine, cut down on sugar and salt intake and make sure I do not run within 2 hours of eating anything. Now since I have stopped eating chocolate I have not suffered from anycramping so it *could* be he culprit..someone said to me that lots of it can act like a mild laxative..(I bet I go for a run again and get cramping lol!)
Training is going good. The 13.1 mile course I will be running on the day has a very steep quarter mile long hill at the end of it. Today I did a 60 minute run and went up that hill (it has proven to be a psychological barrier for me as I have dreading trying to run up it. A few years back I struggled walking up it and can remember I was so unfit my mum managed to make her way up it and I floundered at the bottom, out of breath and heaving chest). Well I did it! YAY! and I kept running so that is near enough 10K with that hill and nowI feel good for race day. Training is becoming more intense now but I am getting a lot out of it.

Cherriterri - September 16, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
That's amazing Storm. Sometimes those mental barriers are harder to get through than the physical ones and you DID IT!!!! I am so happy for you and I know you will do a great job on race day.

:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

stormgirl - September 16, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
Thanks Cherri :huggs:

stormgirl - September 22, 2007 06:22 AM (GMT)
Did my longest run for a while yesterday of almost 8.5 miles...took around 1h 20 mins and was running with a friend so that pace was a little faster than usual and we talked the whole way round. We basically ran about 65-70% of the actual half marathon route so I am feeling pretty confident now :bouncy:

TeachX3 - September 22, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)

:jumping: !!WOOOT!! :jumping:

Cherriterri - September 22, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
You are doing so great Stormy!! You really are an inspiration!!

:yourock:

stormgirl - September 24, 2007 04:17 PM (GMT)
Just ran 7.9 miles in 1h 15 minutes. I am starting to get a feel for how long sunday is going to take me. I am gunning for sub 2 hours but I know that might be wishful thinking for me first half marathon. I think race day nerves coupled with the atmosphere will see me run faster than training runs. I am nervous already lol!

Cherriterri - September 24, 2007 05:02 PM (GMT)
You are doing great Stormy!!! Sub 2 hours would be an awesome time. :cheer:

shygemini - September 24, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
best of luck for sunday!!

i was going to ask how long a half marathon was but i looked back on the posts and i think it is 13.1 miles? That sounds so long...i think just finishing it is an accomplishment in itself!

Happyjaxx - September 24, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
That's awesome stormy! I can't wait to hear about SUnday!

NicC - September 25, 2007 01:31 AM (GMT)
Cheering you on from here!!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

stormgirl - September 25, 2007 04:49 PM (GMT)
Thankeee lovelies :huggs: yeah 13.1miles shy...masochistic or what lol!
I am nervous already...just done a 5.1 mile run in 53 minutes so not such a good time today...felt strong though. My training has really built up my endurance and the stomach cramping has abated somewhat. :jumping:

stormgirl - September 28, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
Only two days to go! Eek! Nerves are here already...I will eat as well as I can today and tomorrow ahead ofSunday. Lots of carbs tomorrow and increased protein today.
My gear is all sorted, one last training run tonight of 4 miles to concentrate on some speed and race pace. Do I feel ready? I think so...adrenaline and nerves will take me the extra distance on the day. So I am gunning for somewhere around 2 hours...an longer than 2h10 and I will be disappointed lol...competitive til the end
See you all the other side

Happyjaxx - September 28, 2007 02:33 PM (GMT)
Oohh! I am soo excited for you!
