Title: Healthy Choice Soups +
TeachX3 - December 31, 2007 05:42 AM (GMT)
For a filling meal, I cook up and add 1 serving (3/4 cup dry) Whole Wheat Rotini noodles to a can of one of the many varieties of Healthy Choice (HEALTHYCHOICE.COM) soup! (I'm addicted!) The serving of noodles is 210 cals and the can of soup (2 servings, but I eat both) is around 100 to 120 cals per serving depending on the variety. I have a couple slices of whole wheat bread, 140 cals and butter 60 cals for a well balanced, yummy, quick and easy hot meal for about 610 to 650 calories total.

Sounds yummy! I just love the whole wheat noodles. I switched 2 years ago and now I cant hardly eat a white noodle.

Me too P2O! I think it is Shy who does not care for the whole wheat noodle (correct me if I'm wrong girl), but I can no longer eat the white flour noodle! Weird huh?
shygemini - December 31, 2007 06:09 AM (GMT)
I'm afraid you are wrong my dear friend
I also love eating whole wheat noodles! I even ask for them in restuarants...you'd be surprised, especially at pasta places they tend to have them on hand! I find they have alot more flavor then the white noodles...its the same thing with white rice compared to brown rice (mmmmm brown rice!).
However i am not a fan of any canned soups...i just don't like the taste. Plus they tend to be high in sodium which isn't good either...of course i know one doesn't always have time to make soups and so it is a good secondary o ption. :)
Actually i am finding i'm not a big fan of whole wheat bread these days either...and it is hard to find a store bought whole wheat bread which is actually whole wheat, and not white bread with molasses for colour. I prefer multigrain bread, rye bread, or homemade whole wheat. :happydance:

ROFLOL! OH NO Teach is wrong!! Not the first time, won't be the last! LOL!!
I think it was the whole wheat tortillas that I remember you not liking... ?
Now Shy, check into those Healthy Choice soups, 'cause they are like 50% less sodium than other canned soups... and to me, they taste yummy! :D

Teach I'm trying this tonight. I'll let you know how it turns out. ;)
TeachX3 - January 2, 2008 10:16 PM (GMT)
LOL I am having this for dinner tonight too P2O!! Which flavor of soup are you having? I think I shall have the Chicken Noodle soup, but of course I'll add the whole wheat noodles to it! :D Enjoy your dinner girl!!

I tried Country Vegetable tonight. ;) It was a big hit with the kids.
Have you ever tried there Split pea and Ham Soup? Just wondering I love Split pea and ham, but I never make it.

Oh I *love* the Country Vegetable! But I have never tried the Split Pea & Ham. I'm so happy you and the kids enjoyed it! :snowman:

*sigh* I really love this soup... and I have a cabinet full of at least half a dozen different varieties right now... but I realize they are high in sodium, even though they are 40% to 60% less than other soups. Does anyone have an suggestion for a SUPER LOW SODIUM brand of soup?? What about the 'sea salt soups'... is that OK? I love soup and don't want to give up the convenience of them. Thanks for any help!

here is what google tells me:
Question: "Can you recommend a satisfying but low-fat canned soup that isn't loaded with salt?"
Answer: Definitely. We like Campbell's Low Sodium Chunky Vegetable Beef because even though it has just 160 calories, 4 grams of fat, and 90 milligrams of sodium for the whole can, it has a rich, satisfying flavor. Healthy Choice Hearty Chicken is another good pick, with 120 calories, 2 gram of fat, and 480 milligrams of sodium per cup. In general, look for vegetable soups that are produced under a major brand's reduced-sodium or "heart-healthy" line. Your daily sodium limit is 2,300 mg, but some experts recommend no more than 1,500 mg.
Three types of low sodium soup:

Thank you Shy, I will look into those! :)

Hi All,
I'm not sure if it is important to any of you - but I check all canned soups for monosodium glutamate (MSG) or any other related glutamtes. These make my fibromyalgia come alive, give me migraines, stomach problems, you name it. My doc recommends people avoid MSG whenever possible. So if it is important to you - double check those soup labels. Most of the canned and dry soups do contain it.
Just a safety suggestion. My health got much better after I discovered this.
featherlitegal - January 26, 2008 05:43 PM (GMT)
PS: Swanson makes a low sodium msg free chicken broth, and Kitchen Basics makes all their broths (many varieties) without any MSG. They're great for making quick soups by dicing up a few veggies noodles etc.
TeachX3 - January 26, 2008 06:18 PM (GMT)
Exactly FLG, MSG is baaaad! ;) As I am with my peanut butter, I am sticking with the Healthy Choice soups... out of all the brands I can purchase from the local grocery, it is the best by far. I can order the low sodium (Shy gave the site above) but my health does not deem that necessary for me... oh and the Healthy Choice soups I eat do NOT have MSG :D Thanks girl!
featherlitegal - January 26, 2008 07:33 PM (GMT)
So glad your Healthy Choice ones don't have that awful MSG! Sounds like you know exactly what I mean ... I wish they'd make a ban on MSG completely.
Do you know - my b/f's grandmother had a bag FULL of msg??? She used it all the time! Urg! I mean - like a bag the size of a sugar bag ... pounds! Makes me nauseous thinking about it! lol
shygemini - January 26, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
wow!!
i remember i used to always feel somewhat ill after eating those ichiban noodles (the noodles you boil and then add essentially a salt flavour packet to) or potato chips. I figured out it was due to the msg, and stopped eating those things years ago!
