Title: What are you reading?
Cherriterri - May 26, 2007 07:14 AM (GMT)
I read ALOT!! I always have a book in my hands so I was wondering what everybody else is reading?
I am just starting a book called Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. I have not started it yet so I don't know if it is good or not. It is about a guy who buys a ghost off the internet so it sounds very interesting.

I'm not reading any book at the moment (other than textbooks) but the last one I read was "The Object of My Affection" by Steven McCauley for an assignment. It turned out to be quite alright, not what I would usually read. Apparently there's a movie starring Jennifer Aniston. It's a lighthearted story about relationships and two confused people who are unsure about themselves and their surroundings. A homosexual man moves in with this lady after his lover breaks up with him. They become close friends, and when the lady gets pregnant she decides that she wants him to help her raise the baby, and not the baby's father.
I had trouble finding this book because I was told at the bookstores that it's "too old to sell" (it was published in the 80's). Only one library in the whole city had it.

I am reading many things on grief including "Motherless Daughters" and I am also reading one chapter of the bible every night at bedtime:)

I am currently reading "The mists of avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I haven't read too much of it yet but i like it :)
Pretty soon the new harry potter book will be out! I'm excited. Dance Party
LimeCrush - May 27, 2007 04:38 AM (GMT)
I'm an Ann Rule addict and I've read nearly everything she's written, some twice. Right now I'm reading Dead by Sunset for the second time! :D
I always have a few books on the go. I'd rather read a book than watch tv.
Righ - May 31, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
The Terror by Dan Simmons :) now what does that say about me lol
Katee - May 31, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
I'm reading The Camel Club right now. I usually finish a book in a few days but this one has taken me a lot longer, been working on it for months. It's not bad but I don't know why I can't seem to finish it. The last book I read before that I believe was The Secret Supper.

I'm 99% positive Joe Hill is Stephen King's son. I've read a ton of Stephen's books but never anything of Joe's. Are the stories they write similar or completely opposite?
stormgirl - June 1, 2007 05:39 AM (GMT)
I used to read loads of Stephen King's novels...I am currently reading Harlan Coben. His books are a great read. He is mainly crime/ thriller. There is one book he wrote called 'Promise Me' which is one of the better books I have read in a long time.
Cherriterri - June 1, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
Joe Hill - Stephen King's son?? I didn't know that! The style is somewhat similar in the sense that the horror of the novel is left very much up to your imagination. Also, things do take unexpected turns and the book really does play on common fears that I think many of us have. Very interesting.
I came across this book because it was in my list of recommendations from Amazon.ca.
Cherriterri - June 2, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
Ok, so I finished Heart Shaped Box and I really enjoyed it. The ending did suprise me a bit which is good. It is a book I will probably read again at some point.
Now I am on to:
Prince Edward by dennis McFarland
It is about an elementary school going through de-segregation in a small town written through the eyes of a 10 year old boy. Sounds interesting. I have not started it yet so no opinion as of yet. :P

That does sound interesting! Please let us know how it turns out when you read it :)
I enjoyed reading "My Sister's Keeper" and part of "The Tenth Circle", both by Jodi Picoult, earlier on in the year. I had to stop reading "The Tenth Circle" to read the book for the assignment, and haven't gone back to it since.
Do you guys find that you tend to read several books at once, or do you prefer sticking with one?
Cherriterri - June 2, 2007 04:52 AM (GMT)
Absolutely I'll let you know how the book goes.
I find that if I have a page turner that is the only book I read. If it is a book I want to read but is one that I do not have a problem putting down I am reading more than one at a time. I have been known to have 3 or 4 books going at one time.
Katee - June 3, 2007 11:37 PM (GMT)
I'll usually read a couple of non-fiction and one fiction book at a time.
I haven't been reading as much as I use to since I seem to get so caught up in books sometimes I end up neglecting family duties.
sarahinparis - June 18, 2007 12:11 PM (GMT)
I am currently reading Madame Bovary by Flaubert (good but very slow, and not very good at holding my attention while I am in pain & on morphine!) and I am also reading Bad Dirt by Annie Proulx which is a short story collection set in Wyoming which is excellent.
Generally I read literary fiction, not bestsellers, but a mix. I am preparing my sack of things to take to the hospital for my surgery and will take several books w me, hopefully will not be so out of it that I cant read...

One of the good things about my recent Scottish trip was the book I found in the seat pocket on the plane !
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Now - I was excited finding a book then groaned when I saw what it was hehe, but as i hate flying I thought I'd try it out, it was fabulous lol, I finished it on Sunday. I hadnt read any before but just assumed it would be very tough to get into but it wasnt at all. It is so funny and the characters are just so real. With a little change to the odd phrase it could be a contemporary novel.
Well worth a go.
Cherriterri - June 20, 2007 05:34 PM (GMT)
That's great Righ. I read that book a while ago and it is now one of my favorites! I was suprised like you, I thought it would be a difficult read but turned out to be an enjoyable one.
LimeCrush - June 23, 2007 05:48 AM (GMT)
Right now I'm reading Diana by Andrew Morton.
I have a stack of John Saul books to go through and I'll pick one of them out when I'm done Diana.
shygemini - June 23, 2007 11:44 PM (GMT)
Shadowmarch- Tad Williams
Re reading it as i got the sequel for my birthday and i can't remember the storyline!
sarahinparis - July 2, 2007 12:20 PM (GMT)
While in my hospital prison I read a LOT.
If anyone really likes history and isn't afraid of either very long books nor very sad war stories, History, by Elsa Morante, was very good (it's on a number of 'best novels of the 20th century' lists -- but it's not easy.
I really liked John Updike's Rabbit Run, a book I had never read but the author and the series are legendary (he has won basically every writing prize given).
And I am currently reading Philip Roth's American Pastoral, which I find stunning. I am rarely disappointed by the novels that have won the Pulitzer Prize.
I would like to revisit more of the classics too, so I will try to find a copy of Great Expectations -- nice tip!

'Girl with a Pearl Earring' by Tracy Chevalier
sarahinparis - November 13, 2007 11:40 AM (GMT)
I've read a ton this year.
I'm currently reading Divisadero, by Michael Ondattje (author of the English Patient), it is very good.
I have a bookshelf full of books in English, but I think I may read in French for my next one...
