Who counts calories and how?

Well, I'm finally thinking seriously about counting calories again.

I'd love to hear what you guys do to count calories.

My hesitation is really around the consistency of logging it all. In the past I've done fitday and sparkpeople but found both to be time-consuming (especially sparkpeople). some days I have a lot of time in front of a computer and access to the net, other days not at all, so the internet option might not be a good choice for me.

I've also done old-school pen and paper before, but don't currently have a calorie book...and it's more complicated living in Paris since here the books are all in grams and I think in ounces and cups and stuff so the French books won't be very useful to me.

I had the most success when doing it on my mobile phone, but to do that now I'll have to wait until late July (the new iPhone!).

Thanks in advance!
Sarah

hi sarah!

hm, i haven't counted calories in awhile i admit. when i was doing it, i found i was most successful by keeping a word document where i'd type in what i wrote each day and estimated calories (sometimes looking things up). Even though it may not have been 100% accurate, even just seeing what i ate helped me alot.

sometimes i just keep a rough guesstimate in my head about calories...i kind of know how much (like 1 cup of 1% milk is 110 calories....salmon piece about 350 calories etc).

i guess i'm not too accurate, but i found the accurate methods as you say, time consuming.

I'm not much of a calorie counter... I try to make good choices (while still enjoying some things that I want) and keep the portions correct. I usually just guesstimate at the calories and try to keep them under 1700... but I do keep a daily food diary. I opened up Windows Notepad, titled it Daily Nutritional Intake, put it on my desktop (well, not on the desktop, I don't like icons cluttering up my desktop, LOL) so I put the icon in my Quick Launch Bar and I log each and everything I eat/drink daily.

I know this is an old thread, but where we have the holidays coming up, and I do have a few things I would like to post here, I thought it would be important to 'renew' the thread with a post...

I have a 'Recipe Calculator' made on 'Quatro-Pro... I have made a HUGE data base of the common foods we usually have... I add in each recipe ingredient, the calories, fat, and fiber content totals (based on the Weight Watchers systems)... I can divide it against the number of servings I intend to serve it by and it will tell me what the calorie break down is per serving...

I find this helps me ALOT especially during the holidays.

Calorieking.com is my favorite site... Was glad to see it listed here in other threads.

The number one best 'tool' that I have in my house when it comes to food preparing/serving.... is my small sized plate.

I use that as my meal plate ALL the time. 1/2 is my vegetable serving, 1/4 a Low GI starch, 1/4 lean protein... if I go for seconds it will always be another serving of vegetables...

Im working on getting some pre-portion-made to-go plates from a catalog I found. It even has a cap-lid on the side for keeping your dressings or marinades separate until meal time.

I believe it is Harriet Carter (?Last name)... I remember seeing these catalogs well over 30 years ago! LOL

They have to-go snack containers (set of two)
They also have containers for meals.. they are the perfect size too! I think they are a set of 6 for like 20 bucks..

If I remember when I go to the gym tonight at the hospital, I will try to remember to bring the catalog up from my car... and will share the item numbers and whatnot...

Im DEFINITELY going to purchase both sets because they are just PERFECT!
