My sister has challenged me to do a triathlon with her next summer. I have accepted this challenge and we will be doing a sprint length triathlon next july or august.

At this point I don't have a specific training plan. I am just working on the walking and weights and stuff right now. I have 2 new jobs, one starting Aug 1 and one Sept 2 to get used to so once I am in the swing of things there I will make a more formal training plan.

It is scary but I know I can do it. :bouncy:

Wow, that is indeed a huge goal!:)

I would just say to be careful! One of my friends just started running, and she got quite good at it and can run long lengths etc but she really hurt her foot! I think maybe she was trying to do too much too fast.

Thanks Shy and Teach.

Shy, I will probably walk most of the run portion since I am too heavy right now to do alot of running, I would kill my knees. I have done a triathlon before and that is what I did. I crossed the finish line and that is what is important to me.

I am in the process of trying to firm up a training plan for the fall. So far I have only gotten plans to go swimming every Wednesday evening. A friend of mine has expressed interest in going swimming with me and that would be wonderful if she did. I think wed will be my best bet for swimming since I will be teaching Tues and Wed during they days so I know I will always have that evening off.

I have also been looking at purchasing an exercise bike because there is no way I am going to ride my bike outside in the winter here!!

Sounds like a fantastic idea! What exactly is a sprint triathlon? I like swimming and cycling - just never been able to get the hang of running yet...(but I can walk all day...)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triathlon

That tells you all the different lengths. The sprint lenght is usually around a 750 metre swim, 20 km bike and a 5 km run but they do vary slightly. I think it is a good lenght for a first try though.

I have to say when I did my last triathlon it was a very profound experience. I have always had a difficult time with sports and have been teased and bullied due to my lack of ability to play team sports. Needless to say it was very difficult for me to even show up to the triathlon but I was determined. I thought I would be called names because I was overweight and not very fast but I just kept thinking 'somebody has to cross the finish line last'. To my suprise the total opposite happened. I struggled a little bit through the bike and had to walk my bike up a couple of the hills. The route was a 10 km circle so it had to be done twice and people who were fast were passing me while they were doing their second lap and I thought they would make fun of me but they all call out encouraging words. It made me cry then and it makes me cry as I write it now. I was third last for that race but I did finish and the amazing thing is, most of the other racers who finished before me waited a the finish line and cheered me on as I finished. I burst into tears at the finish line when they announced my name and after said "is now a triathlete". It was a huge deal for me and I will never forget those encouraging words. I was not judged for being overweight or slow, I was respected for showing up at all.

Wow that sounds so cool! I will go check out the link! :congratulations: On being a triathlete. I would really like to do one before I'm 40 (in a year and a half) but I'm terrified!

Ok, so over the last week or so I have been working on a workout plan to start once I have a regular schedule I can count on. I almost have it ironed out but have to check on a couple of things (swimming pool times etc) to see if it will work out. I'll post it here once I have everything organized. It is going to take alot of dedication but I think (or rather I KNOW) I can do it!!

Ok, here is my plan. I am going to use this plan as my fall challenge plan as well. I am on vacation from the 1st to the 9th of September and will be away in Toronto so I am going to start this on the 10th. While I am on vacation I plan on being careful with what I eat and drink enough water and try to get some walks in as much as I can.

Ok, so here it is

Week 1
Monday
-Walk minimum of 5 kms
-weights for arms
-ab work

Tuesday
-Cycle minimum 15 kms
-squats for legs

Wednesday
-swim
-weights for arms
-ab work

Thursday
-Cycle minimum 15 kms
-squats for legs

Friday
-walk minimum 5 kms
-weights for arms
-ab work

Saturday
-walk or cycle but shorter than above distances for a bit of a rest

Sunday
-rest day

week 2

Monday
-walk minimum 5 kms
-weights for arms
-ab work

Tuesday
-Cycle minimum 15 kms
-squats for legs

Wednesday
-swim
-weights for arms
-ab work

Thursday
-cycle minimum 15 kms
-squats for legs

Friday
-walk minimum 3 kms
-weights for arms
-ab work

Saturday and sunday
-rest days as these will be 12 hour night shifts.

I know it is pretty intense but I don't have all that much time to train for the actual race so I need to go all out.
