Whether it's cocktails on ladies' night out, a beer at the pub, or a glass of wine with a delicious gourmet meal, most of us enjoy a drink (or three!) every now and again. But remember what I've been teaching you: In addition to being aware of the foods that are good for you, it's important to know which ones are truly bad for you. And let's face it — alcohol is in the latter camp. Alcohol can sabotage your weight-loss efforts. It's a simple carbohydrate and your body treats it as sugar when breaking it down. Alcohol also causes an increase in blood sugar and fat storage, and because it doesn't contain any fiber, it will also cause a sugar crash as well as an increased appetite for carbs. If you choose to have a drink, avoid sugary cocktails, beer, and wine. Stick to clear alcohols like vodka and rum with calorie-free mixers a calorie-free mixer like club soda. And you can always drink it straight (or on the rocks). It's also a good idea to eat something around the time you're going to be drinking. Try to have a meal that's high in protein, which will help curb the release of carbs from the alcohol and create more balance in your blood sugar levels. The meal will also serve to fill you up so you'll be less likely to make unhealthy food decisions or succumb to cravings when you're hungry and tipsy later. |

Thanks I just had to add this article when I saw it and tell you girls something funny. The only alcohol I drink is wine...but on the weekends, after the kids are in bed, my husband and I love to open a bottle (or two ) and sit and play card and just talk. Well I thought of wine as "free calories", it really never accured to me that I should look at the calories or treat it like sugar...it's grapes. Well now I know.

One thing I do enjoy though... I will take some pretty large high-ball glasses.. fill it to the rim with ice.. I add 3oz of my favorite wine, then add the rest with plain soda-water... My own wine cooler and it cuts the quantity of alcohol down as opposed to the wine coolers on the market that have alot more than just wine and water |

Wine is good for you in small doses, even say a glass a day is fine (especially red wine). Of course this depends on your own nutritional needs and personal preference. However, you need to factor it into your calories just like anything else, and realize that having a glass may mean giving up something else. Alcohol does have calories just like carbohydrates, however these are completely empty calories, meaning that you get no nutritional value from them. I agree it is important to eat before you drink something, however eating protein will not affect the order of metabolism in your body. Carbohydrates are always metabolized first, followed by protein and then fats.
