Hi everybody

I live in Chicago, work long hours and sit all day. I eat breakfast on the train, lunch and dinner at the desk at work and that is how I gained 50 pounds in 6 years. I am not sure where to start - any suggestions?

My goal is to live a healthy lifestyle from now, my short term goal is to lose 25 lbs. by Christmas and to start to exercise regularly.

:thanx:

Hi Bella, welcome to the forum.
For breakfast you could try some yogurt, maybe make a smoothie to go, cereal, protein bar

For lunch and dinner you could try turkey on whole wheat, a salad, healthy frozen dinners like SmartOnes (if you have a microwave)

For snacks, maybe some pretzels, laughing cow cheese or string cheese with crackers, fruit (I love frozen grapes and they are chilled when they defrost) carrot sticks, roasted nuts (you have to be careful with these, I have a hard time eating just 1 serving of almonds)

I'll think of some more. ;)

Again, welcome to the forum!!! :D

Welcome to the forum ! :)

I think the biggest change (maybe the hardest, but a really important one!) is to stop eating at your desk at work. When we are eating while doing something else, we tend not to pay as much attention to how much we are eating. Also, it is not healthy to just sit at your desk all day, and i'm sure you are allowed to take at least some small breaks! See if y ou can eat lunch in a lunchroom, or outside. I am sure this will help you out.

I would make this change even before changing your food you are eating. What have you been eating for breakfast, lunch a nd dinner?

Welcome Bella. My advice in addition to what has already been said is to make small changes one at a time so that you are making new habits. That way you are more likely to keep up with the new behaviour.

Thank you everyone for great advices. I will try to make one big change every week. First week, I'll start to eat breakfast at home; week after I'll try to add 1/2 hour walks to my schedule, etc etc.
I am allowed to take breaks at work but my day is never long enough and I wish it has 30 hours instead of 24. We are always running behind at work and I always think if I take a lunch break I am wasting my time :( I know it is wrong to think like that but I can't help it :(

But, I made a decision to change my lifestyle, so taking a break at work is one of the changes. More exercise is another change I have to make - BTW did anyone try a program called Barry's Boot camp? I've seen in on Infomercial and received it yesterday. I will do my first workout tonight.

Thank you again, talk to you soon

Hi Bella. First Workout  Let me know if you like it.

I agree that if you can eat somewhere else it will be very helpful. I always ate in my car and I still do from time to time, but trying to change that habbit as helped alot. But for the times you must eat at you desk...here are a few tips.

For major meals (Lunch and Dinner) atleast stop what you are doing an take the time to really focus on eating even if you only have 10 minutes, that way you are not just mindlessly eating. When I was always eating in the car I don't know how many times I would be half through something and think "I'm not hungry" "This don't taste good" ect.

Then I would also keep low calorie foods on hand at your desk for snaking when you are working. Like a bag of carrots, if you are busy working and snack on entire bag of carrot sticks in an afternoon...no big deal...an entire bag of chips...a whole different story. 8)
