My smoking history...

I started smoking cigarettes when I was around 13 years old (to impress a boy). I smoked a pack a day all the way up until the morning of my 35th birthday, October 18, 2002. I had tried to quit countless times over the years... new year resolutions, etc... I truly enjoyed smoking and I just could not make myself stop, so I finally gave up trying. Then God told me, He spoke to my heart and TOLD ME that I would not have another one as of that date, that HE would remove the thorn from my flesh, so that He would receive all of the glory... what a miracle! My hubby still smokes, (not in the house or in our car, etc...) but, the smell is just sooo nasty. Every now and again when I think I want a smoke, I go to my hubby and smell his fingers where the cigarette is held, EWWWWWWW ...and then I'm all better. They say that there is nothing worse than a 'reformed smoker'... and it's the truth, 'cause I am the worst! LOL!

... that was written a couple of years ago... today I am smoking again. I started back up at the end of July 2008, just a few months ago. I am starting to cough again, having trouble breathing, I stink (you NON smokers know what I'm talking about) and I do not want to continue my life this way. I had put them down, away and gone for almost 6 full years, I can and will do it again... with the intent of it being forever!

Yesterday was a good day. I had only 10 cigarettes total!

Today is starting off good too... normally I wake up, stretch, use bathroom, weigh in, get coffee and head directly outside to have my first cig of the day, but this morning I waited an hour before having one! I will strive very hard to keep the count under 10 today. I am trying to taper off to rid my body of the amount of nicotine it is used to and then I plan to stop cold turkey after a period of time.

:happydance:

A few things I do to help me lay off the smokes:

I never smoke inside.
Not in the house, not in the car, not in a restaurant, etc... so if I want a cig, I go outside... in the cold.

I never sit down to smoke.
I walk around, I even do exercises. This way I am out of breath during the cigarette and less likely to smoke as much of it or even enjoy it.

I never eat when I am wanting a cigarette.
If I am craving the nicotine... I drink water, clean up around the house, exercise a bit, just do anything and everything I can to remove my mind from the craving... such as making this post.

I keep the smoking on a schedule much like I do my food.

EDITED to add:

When I go outside and not smoke, such as to talk on the phone with my husband, take a dog out, get the mail, etc... I make sure to breathe in large full breaths into my lungs. To remind myself what it feels like to have good, fresh air.

Also, I was in quite the habit of every single time I would talk to hubby on the phone (and we talk a lot), I would automatically have a smoke. This is a hard one to stop, but now I make a point of calling him without having one.

EDITED to add:

I also pray... a lot. And when I look at the clock and see that it has been a long time since I last had a cigarette and I am still not wanting one, I praise God!

Congrats on cutting down!

When my mom was trying to quit her doctor told her to change her habbits, if you smoke and have coffee, switch to tea. So you are doing good changing your habits and hopefully you won't be a this journey long.

You have already done the hard part, realizing that you need to change. Good Luck!!! :D

Good Luck Teach...all habits are hard to break...especially the bad ones. Acknowledging that you want & need to stop smoking is the first step. And now you are on to the second, the third, etc. One step at a time. OSAAT! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

hmmm, great question Joyful. I would like to blame it on stress, depression, etc... due to how and why my oldest son left home, because the blame game is just easy to do. But in reality, it was my own fault. I did not care about anything (which is why I also gained 8 pounds during that time) and I did not hold myself accountable for my choices. I allowed my sadness and the circumstances of life to control me. For people who know me, that is completely and totally out of my character.

I will have my last cigarette by midnight Sunday night... I will not smoke as of Monday, November 10th, 2008. Going cold turkey.

Ok Teach...no I don't smoke, but I still understand a lot of what you have been going through (I have been down your road ) :( ..your emotions with the personal family crisis (or so it felt to you at the time) , how you reacted...all perfectly normal due to the situation. Sometimes it can be hard to cope when life throws us these curves, but we are all better for the experiences & the lessons it teaches us. Even though it is very hard to even be rational about things at the time we are going through it all. But, look on the bright side now, this with your son, was not your choice, but his & we all make our choices good or bad. What counts is what we do now... :)

You are now on the other side of that dark tunnel ...you are eating healthy, exercising, sharing & motivating others via this forum, being a good Mom, & soon to be Grandmom, & now you are quitting smoking...hoo ray for you...just think...no 2nd hand smoke around the wee one. :congratulations:

Boy oh boy the craving for a cigarette is strong... How long is it again before something either becomes or ceases to be a habit, how many days in a row is it again, can anyone remember?

Oh I will do this. I am one determined young lady!

Some things I am feeling:

My blood seems to be hot, I 'feel' it in my arms and legs and it is warm.

My heart is racing and beating harder, I have a bit of the shakes.

My brain feels fuzzy.

I feel as if I am having anxiety attacks... but they go away after a time, only to come back again...

My mind is always on smoking.

I truly CANNOT BELIEVE that with only 3 months of smoking, I am going through such withdraws!!

Teach, I bare BAD news. I think that it's 21 days before something is a habit, that's what I alwasy heard anyways.

I hope that you have a good day today. Do you think that it would help your symptoms or your will power to leave the house? Maybe go to the Mall or a museum, or something. :bouncy:

I would also suggest that you take the money you were spending on cigarettes and put it back(This can be hard sometimes if you are on a budget but if you were still smoking you would be spending that money anyway) and do something nice for yourself, at least for the first month.

If you smoked 1 pack a day at 3 dollars a pack, you could save $90 a month or over $1000 in a year.

Ok WOW do I have a report. So, my husband got home from his second job at 12:30AM last night. I took 2 drags off of his cigarette. As I concluded the second puff, my vision went black, my legs went so weak that I fell. (my husband was standing behind me, so I was ok) I did not pass out, but it was very, very close. I was immediately sick to my stomach, like I wanted to throw up, the room seemed to be closing in around me. I was super dizzy. I felt totally out of control of what was happening to my body and the SCARIEST of all, I could feel, I could FEEL the nicotine going through my blood stream!! My legs and arms felt warm and tingly. I think that is all of the symptoms I experienced. For anyone who smokes, if you can do these types of experiments, you would then feel for yourself what a drug, a poison, cigarettes are. They may not alter us so that we are 'high' for a long period like other drugs, but they do alter our body.

Today I am doing much better... the idea of wanting a cigarette is there, but I am having no physical cravings at this time. Today will be much easier than yesterday, and I am looking forward to that!

yep Joyful, God... and the fact that they are poison! LOL

Hey P2O, thanks for asking :) I am doing OK, I have not had a cigarette, I will not be a smoker anymore. I have been quite stressed out this evening... so I am currently having an herbal tea mix to calm the nerves.

I guess this thread has served its purpose... I'll let y'all know if I ever decide to start up again, thanks for the support and kind words guys!! :huggs:
