A couple of friends of mine go to hot yoga on a very regular basis. I have been considering it but am a little afraid. I am worried that I am too big to get into some of the positions but my friends assure me there are people of all sizes there and you just do as much as you can. The both talk about how great and stretched out they feel when they are finished and that it is a great stress reliever. I was wondering if anybody has tried it and what you though. I think I will give it a shot when I get home from vacation. |

Terri, I have never done yoga in my life, so I do not have an experienced opinion to give, however... if your friends are urging you, and you enjoy doing a class type of exercise, and you want some *me* time, .... etc... etc... (I read tons into your comment of why you *should*!) than I say go for it!!! Just go slow and see how it goes, you can always change your mind after a couple of classes, right? |

Cherri - definitely give it a try. I did some yoga when I was at your weight and you'll be surprised how fast you improve when you stick with it. |

Here is my suggestion, and i strongly suggest you take it ![]() Try normal yoga first (i.e. not 'hot' yoga). I find i get hot enough doing yoga and contorting myself as it is that i might just pass out if i was doing actual hot yoga (where they turn up the temp in the room and no fans etc). HOwever i don't mean to discourage you! I liken it to say, not going swimming in the ocean before you go swimming in a pool. YOu may love yoga, i know lots of people do. I love pilates because i find it is more applicable to people of all sizes...however...that all depends on your instructor and how good they are. A good instructor will suggest different levels of exercises, or alternate exercises, based on your experirence level. But they don't always do that. ![]() Just my 2 cents. |

That's a good point Shy - I was definitely doing normal yoga not hot yoga. I also prefer pilates now but if your friends are right about people of all sizes being there and the instructor letting you go at your pace then there shouldn't be an issue.

Hey Cherri, did you end up trying the yoga out? When I first joined the gym, I felt really uncomfortable that people might be looking at me because I'd be huffing and puffing or I would look funny doing my exercises, but then I realised that we all have to start somewhere. The superfit woman running 30 mins on the treadmill or the big muscle man in the weight section at one point would have been the beginner - exactly where I was. I've seen new people come to a class and start out all over the place, stick at it and pick it up in no time. I remember one lady I used to see at the gym working out regularly - I was away for like 3 months and came back and WOW, she had lost masses of weight and looked like she had been working out for years. We are all beginners at one point or another, so I say jump in and give it a go.

I keep meaning to go but never seem to get there. I am quite self concious of going but eventually I will have to get over that. My schedule is more normal in September so I was thinking after I return from vacation would be a good time to give it a go. Who knows, maybe I will love it!! |
